Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise at the age of a little girl. Aunt Denise worked as an overnight nurse in order to give her an opportunity to study theatre or literature. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt recommended it to DuVernay. DuVernay learned the art of being a good instrument for social activism. In the same way, her mother was conscious of her social status and influenced that she could express her thoughts through the arts. Although DuVernay grew up in Compton with her family, she was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. Her father recalled the protests for civil rights that took place across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. The summers she spent in Alabama's Selma would influence her later on to create an animated film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied at the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay started producing for the broadcast industry while she was still at university. She began her career as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the monitor and investigate the residence of an individual member of the Jury. Her disappointment was evident in the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to move into the field of public relations. DuVernay was immediately hired out of college as an assistant publicist in an unassuming studio. The year 1999 was the time she launched her own business of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. She also started several lifestyles and promotions networks like Urban Beauty Collective. Her fame is due to her performances as Anna Payne in American Experience, (1987) A More Perfect Union and A More Perfect Union (2009). Autumn played Rose from A More Perfect Union as well as Anna Payne from American Experience.
